We all knew that the DCCC was
doing everything it could to protect the old Democratic Party — one that bowed
to rich donors, that pandered to massive corporations, and that protected
out-of-touch incumbents. But we didn’t realize that that it had evolved into
an actual points system:
Generally speaking, these
points can be redeemed for favors from leadership — they symbolize your loyalty
to the DCCC, and what you’re owed in return.
And yes, those are the only
things you can do to earn points. If you raise tens of thousands of dollars
from mega donors, you get a lot of points. But If you register new voters
in your district, you get nothing.
But more importantly, those
points can affect what committee positions you get as a representative. In
other words, your total fundraising can affect your say on issues like the
climate crisis, renewable energy, gun policy, and so much more.
If you think we shouldn’t be
giving representatives more of a say on critical issues like the Green New Deal
just because of how much money they can raise from rich corporate donors, then
donate to help build Justice Democrats as the counterpart to the DCCC right now
»
It gets worse. This year, AOC
raised over $90,000 for progressive, front-line Democrats with her digital
fundraising program. But the DCCC said that didn’t count for any points.
Their system is geared to
benefit representatives who raise high-dollar money, and specifically penalizes
you if you try to raise that money from small-dollar, grassroots donors. That’s
the Democratic Party of the past, not the future.
Here’s the reality: our
institutions need structural change if we’re going to have a Democratic Party
that reflects the values of the diverse, working-class people of this
nation.
