President Trump has ordered the dismantling of the White House Peace Vigil, potentially ending what is recognised as the longest continuous protest in US history. The vigil, first established in 1981, has stood outside the White House for more than four decades, calling for global nuclear disarmament and peace. Activist William Thomas began the round-the-clock protest, which has since been maintained by a rotating group of volunteers. Trump issued the order on Friday after a reporter described the small tent opposite the White House as an “eyesore”. Supporters say the vigil has long been a symbol of free speech and anti-war activism and argue that tearing it down undermines the right to protest in front of the nation’s most powerful institution. The decision marks the likely end of a 44-year vigil that spanned seven presidencies and stood as a daily reminder of the call for peace.
