In a powerful moment, a massive crowd in Mexico City chanted “Palestina libre,” meaning “Free Palestine,” back-to-back during Puerto Rican rapper Residente’s free concert at the Zócalo on Saturday. The 29-time Latin Grammy winner dedicated the night to resistance, peace and solidarity, inviting onstage members of the Abed family, Palestinian refugees from Gaza now living in Mexico. Hundreds of thousands filled the historic square, waving Palestinian flags and echoing chants for freedom as Residente performed in attire bearing the words “Free Palestine.” The concert, one of the largest ever held at the Zócalo, blended music, protest and activism, amplifying the call for justice in Palestine to numerous more who also tuned in online.
