Yesterday a freshman Democratic congressman, Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey, announced he is changing parties and joining the Republicans.
What you may not know is that Rep. Van Drew only won the Democratic primary last year after the DCCC meddled in the election to drum out his more progressive opponent.
I can’t say I’m surprised. I’ve seen the DCCC meddle in our candidates’ races, too. Time and time again Brand New Congress candidates like Cori Bush, Paula Jean Swearengin and Anthony Clark have been told to “step aside” and “wait their turn.”
They didn’t listen -- and neither did we. When we say we are fighting for a Brand New Congress that puts people before party, we mean just that.
The party elite don’t get to pick your representatives. You do.
The party elite don’t get to choose which issues matter most to your community. You do.
They don’t get to decide when it’s our turn. We do.
Our candidates are committed to the principles outlined in our 21st Century Bill of Rights. Healthcare for all. Housing for all. The right to self-determination, privacy, a living wage, a clean and healthy environment and a sustainable economy that guarantees your quality of life.
Those things aren’t on the menu for the DCCC. The party leaders throw their weight behind guys like Van Drew, who enjoys an A+ rating from the NRA.
