Cornel West: Bernie Sanders Is Wrong. The Democratic Party Cannot Be Reformed

In the wake of Donald Trump’s election victory over Hillary Clinton, some progressives are now pushing a shake up of the Democratic Party’s leadership in efforts to reform the party. But Dr. Cornel West says the Democratic Party can’t be reformed. During the Democratic primary, West endorsed Bernie Sanders. Sanders later picked him to serve on the Democratic platform committee. After Hillary Clinton won the nomination, West made headlines when he endorsed Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein. For more we speak with West about the Democratic Party and what organizing looks like in the wake of the election.

TRANSCRIPT

AMY GOODMAN: So, a lot of questions, and I encourage people to watch the full hour at democracynow.org. You were a big supporter of Bernie Sanders. You served on the Democratic Platform Committee on behalf of Bernie Sanders. Do you think he’s right to re— work on reforming the Democrats rather than focus on building a new party? He is leading a movement called our revolution. He has said we have to work with Donald in different ways. He says to the people who supported him. Elizabeth Warren, in the last day, has said she is not so clear she’s going to be working with Donald Trump. I mean, very interesting when Barack Obama came in, Mitch McConnell made it clear they won’t work with Obama at all. But, what are your thoughts on all of this, the inside/outside strategy?

CORNEL WEST: Well, I think there’s going to be a lot of different responses. I have a deep love and respect for brother Bernie Sanders. I always will. I don’t always agree with him. I’m not convinced that the Democratic Party can be reformed. I think it still has a kind of allegiance to a neoliberal orientation. It still has allegiance to Wall Street, the very victory of Nancy Pelosi is a sign that neoliberalism is still hegemonic in the party. I hope that Keith Ellison is able to present a challenge to it. But, my hunch is —

AMY GOODMAN: — as head of — if he makes it is head of the Democratic National Committee.

CORNEL WEST: If he’s head of the DNC. But my hunch is the Democratic Party has simply run out of gas. I mean, this is a party that couldn’t even publicly oppose TPP when we debated that in the Platform Committee. And that’s just one small example. Couldn’t stop — couldn’t vote to stop Fracking, and so on. So, it’s still so tied to big money.

AMY GOODMAN: Even though Hillary Clinton had changed her position, because of the pressure of Bernie Sanders on TPP?

CORNEL WEST: Exactly, and tight there in the debates, they got the word from the White House, we didn’t want to embarrass the president. Embarrass the president? What about the poor and working people who are dealing with the suffering? Is that less important than embarrassing the president? And they were very clear about that. And I pushed and pushed and pushed. Here’s somebody — they can’t even talk about the Israeli occupation honestly. The president uses a language in 2009, they can’t use it in the platform. Why? Because they tied to the lobby, they tied to APEC. So that, when you have those kinds of restraints on you, these albatrosses around your neck, how are you going to be a party for the people? How you going to be a party for working people, poor people. How you going to be a party for those brothers and sisters in Yemen who are dealing with US-supported troops and bombs killing them, mediated with Saudi Arabian government? How you going to deal with the Palestinians, deal with the Israeli occupation? How you going to deal with Africans, the expansion of afrikom, and so forth? There has to be some integrity and moral consistency. And unfortunately, the Democratic Party just strikes me as not being able to meet that challenge. But, I’ll work with brother Bernie Sanders and others both out of love and because I know in his heart he’s got a certain deep commitment to working people. But now, even as an independent socialist, he’s behaving as a New Deal liberal.

AMY GOODMAN: What does that mean?

CORNEL WEST: That means that he is a — well, a Democratic Socialist is a radical who’s critical of the system. A New Deal liberal works within the system and doesn’t want to bring massive critique for structural change. And I can understand it because he’s inside. But those of us who are outside and free, we’re going to tell the truth. We’re going to be honest. We will have certain kind of moral and spiritual integrity. And no matter how marginal that makes us, we’re not, in any way, going to become well-adjusted to this injustice out here.

AMY GOODMAN: We’re going to break and come back to what’s happened in North Carolina, and then you’re headed to North Dakota. So, we’ll talk about that. Dr. Cornel West, Professor Emeritus at Princeton University. He endorsed Bernie Sanders, and was served on the Democratic Platform Committee. This is Democracy Now! We’ll be back in a minute.

The left will never reform the Democratic Party and should stop trying

NOVEMBER 5, 2016 BY DAN AREL

With the election only a few days away, voters are seeing the final push from left-leaning liberals urging the radical left to hold their nose and vote for Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. The argument goes that she is far better than Donald Trump and that once elected the left can work on reforms.

This is the perfect strategy in theory, but in practice is a waste of the left’s time, and will result in zero reformations. The Democratic Party is beyond reform, as witnessed by anyone who watched the party’s elite work overtime ensuring Bernie Sanders never received the nomination. Or, anyone who has watched the party over the past decades.

Beyond the party’s elite, however, lies a larger problem for the left. Liberals become complacent when they win elections and stop fighting for reforms.

Groups such as the Community Party USA and the Democratic Socialists of America have made the decision to operate within the confines of the party, hoping to push through socialist programs and policies, while still conceding that they must do so within the confines of capitalism. In doing so, they claim they can begin to reform the capitalist system with aims of creating a socialist economy via progression.

Just like the Clinton strategy, in theory, this is sound, in practice it is futile.

If Clinton wins in November, many electorally active liberals will go back to a life free of everyday politics, they will watch as the Fight for $15 continues to earn victories around the country while ignoring the work of the Green Party or the Socialist Party USA who both argue that while $15 is better, wages should be tied to the living wage, or better, workers should be able to control the means of production.

Yet, liberals won’t help in that fight. Their electoral complacency will give Clinton an illusionary mandate in liberal politics. Her center-right policy reforms will be championed by the liberal masses and will make the radical left’s fight even harder. It won’t be for another four years that the left will see a chance to shake up the politically docile as another conservative threat rises to the top in order to unseat Clinton. Repeating the cycle of faux-liberal revolution in which they are going to change the world and fight for the working class, until the day after election day when they go back to thinking the Democrats will just solve all their problems.

This is what keeps parties like the Green and Socialist Party USA from endorsing Democratic candidates. They understand that revolutionary politics must be revolutionary on all fronts. If you give into the demands of the elitist’s parties, you create a complacent voter base that doesn’t fight for social justice.

The idea of reforming the Democratic Party may seem appealing, and it may even seem easier than building a third party or a revolutionary party, but it will prove to only be the revolutionaries demise. Counter-revolutionary parties will fight all revolutionary insurgents. If voters didn’t learn this by watching Sanders, they may never learn it. Yet, it’s a message the left must continue to spread. A rejection of two-party politics, taking away their numbers, rejecting them at the polls will be the only way to reform politics in the United States. The voter’s voice is their vote, and until they begin to use it wisely, their voice will continue to be silenced.

West Point grad behind pro-communist photos reportedly was flagged to superiors in 2015

Second Lt. Spenser Rapone is seen in an undated photo making a fist and holding a cap with a sign inside that reads, "Communism will win." (Twitter)

A West Point cadet whose pro-communism messages on social media were reported to his superiors in 2015 still managed to graduate from the military academy and currently serves in the field with an Army combat team, a new report says.
The social media activity of 2nd Lt. Spenser Rapone was concerning, retired Army Lt. Col. Robert Heffington, who taught history that year at the Academy, stated under oath, The Daily Caller reports.

“I cannot reconcile the image of a first class cadet at West Point with the things he has posted online for the world to see,” Heffington said in a written copy of the statement. “To me, these are red flags that cannot be ignored, and I fail to see how this individual can possibly graduate and become a commissioned officer in six months.”

One of the tweets Heffington was alarmed about was Rapone reportedly writing “F*ck this country and its false freedom."

“From his various online rantings and posts, it appears that DCT Rapone is an avowed Marxist, which is completely out of line with the values of this nation and its Army,” Heffington said. “He also… even implicitly justifies the actions of ISIS and blames the United States for terrorist attacks.”

In late 2015, Rapone was removed from his Ranger battalion for violating standards and graduated from the Academy the following year as a cadet. He currently is in the field with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, according to the Army Times, quoting Army spokeswoman Lt. Col. Tonya Stokes. Stokes says the division is also investigating his behavior.
In one incident, Heffington wrote that he confronted Rapone after he heard yelling coming from a professor’s office.

The cadet snapped back, “Sir, you don’t have the right to use my honor against me!” Heffington said. Heffington added that he had served as a commissioned officer for 18 years after graduating from West Point in 1997.

Rapone recently posted online two photographs that appear to be from his graduation at West Point in May 2016, The Hill reported.
In one photo, he is holding the inside of his cap to the camera, showing the message “communism will win” written on the inside. In another, he reveals a Che Guevara T-shirt beneath his uniform shirt. Guevara was an Argentine Marxist revolutionary who partnered with Fidel Castro during the Cuban Revolution.

In other social media posts, Rapone reportedly says he will “happily dance” on the grave of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and calls Defense Secretary James Mattis “vile” and “evil.” McCain, who was a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for more than five years before his release in 1973, recently revealed he is battling brain cancer.

Two recent Academy graduates also told The Daily Caller that they were aware of Rapone’s reputation before he became a news item in late September.

The school told Fox News that it is looking into the newly-surfaced report and will release a statement later.

It said previously that “2nd Lieutenant Rapone's actions in no way reflect the values of the U.S. Military Academy or the U.S. Army.”

According to the Army Times, Rapone has been awarded a Good Conduct Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, an Army Achievement Medal and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, among others.
