The Senate just confirmed one of the least qualified of Donald Trump’s cabinet picks… and that’s really saying something. Betsy DeVos, a billionaire Republican donor and consistent enemy of public schools, is now our Secretary of Education.

Hundreds of thousands of people called their senators to urge a “no” vote, but she still passed Senate confirmation. How did that happen? It’s pretty simple. As much as Republican senators care about their constituents’ concerns, they care a lot more about their big campaign donors. And the DeVos family has donated $200 million to elect Republicans. (Whoa!)

When only two Senate Republicans can bring themselves to oppose such a clear violation of the public trust and an attack on our public schools, you know we’re slipping into oligarchic territory. That’s why we need a 50 state solution to rebuild the Democratic Party into a people's’ party and replace all of the establishment senators on both sides of the aisle.

MOSCOW — President Vladimir Putin says he's grateful to Slovenia for its offer to host his first meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, adding that it will depend on Washington.

Speaking after the Kremlin talks Friday with his Slovenian counterpart, Putin said that Russia welcomes Trump's statements about the need to restore the strained Russia-U.S. ties.

He said Moscow is waiting for the Trump administration to prepare for dialogue. He added that Moscow and Washington could jointly tackle the terror threat and deal with other global challenges.

Putin thanked the Slovenian president for his readiness to organize his meeting with Trump. He added it will depend on the U.S. on whether to hold such a meeting.
